Archbishop’s Residence

Constructed in 1829, the four-story building on Charles Street adjacent to the Basilica of the Assumption has been the home of 13 of the 16 Archbishops of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  Originally the building had a stucco exterior, but was covered in Formstone in the 50s, and the material had deteriorated. The residence underwent a complete exterior restoration to return it to its 1865 appearance and bring it back in line with the appearance of the Basilica.

WEI went wall by wall, using enclosed scaffold to carefully remove the cement formstone panels, and repair the historic wood trim and brick structure underneath. Once the brick backup was fully secure and repointed, WEI custom shaped several thousand linear feet of copper flashing at all windows, wall intersections, trim, and foundation lines.

Our stucco team then applied a 3-coat system of historically accurate stucco to the entire exterior.  Each wall was incised with faux joints to mimic a stone ashlar construction.  Our crew built a new balustrade at the front and sanded all woodwork, making it paint-ready.  We then sealed all the stucco with a breathable potassium silicate-based coating to match the exterior of the Basilica for a unified campus appearance.  WEI cleaned the marble windowsills and replaced several sets of shutters as a final touch.
