Riversdale is a five-part late Georgian mansion plantation house that was built between 1801 & 1807, as a part of a 2,000 acre farm. The mansion maintains a high quality Federal style interior. The home was built by Henri Joseph Stier, and later his daughter, Rosalie Stier Calvert and her husband, George Calvert. The mansion is currently owned by the Maryland National Capital Parks and Planning Commission (MNCPPC) and is used as a museum and interpretive site.
Worcester Eisenbrant was contracted to perform selective exterior stucco, stone, and wood cornice repairs. The entire façade was cleaned, and the latex paint stripped from stucco surfaces. A historic lime-based stucco was used to patch areas as required, and a potassium mineral silicate coating was applied to match the historic paint finishes report.
The aquia creek sandstone columns at the front and rear porticos were surveyed and selectively demolished to remove delaminated previously installed patches. The columns were patched with a repair mortar and finished with a potassium silicate stain to match the streaks and grains of the existing stone.
Failing lead paint was scraped from the wood cornice. Minor epoxy repairs, Dutchmen, and detail replication/replacement was performed throughout. The cornice was painted to match the historic paint finishes report.
In the basement level, WEI stripped the existing latex paint from the foundation walls and performed plaster repairs as required. These walls were then coated with a high-perm sol-silicate mineral paint. Masonry window openings were repaired to receive interior storm windows.
On the first, second, and mezzanine levels, WEI removed existing solar film from the windows, replaced broken glass, and installed interior friction-fit storm windows. Minor plaster repairs at previous water damaged locations were performed at selective locations throughout the mansion.
