DAR National Headquarters

Memorial Continental Hall is the original building of the National Association of the Daughters of the American Revolution complex in northwest Washington, DC. The marble Beaux-Arts building was designed by Edward Pierce Casey in 1905 and completed in 1910. It was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architectural legacy, but also for its role in history as the host of the Conference on the Limitation of Armaments in 1921. Since the addition of a new auditorium (Constitution Hall) and administration building, Memorial Continental Hall primarily houses the DAR Museum period rooms and the genealogy library.

WEI was contracted to perform exterior cleaning and repair on the marble exterior of Memorial Continental Hall.  Before starting the work, a detailed survey was conducted to document all the required repairs and track their progress.  In addition to cleaning and repointing 100% of the envelope, isolated areas were treated to remove biological growth, metallic stains, and gypsum crusts.  Areas with friable material received consolidation treatment. Our skilled team of masons carried our repairs, patches, and replacements for broken stone and deteriorated balusters. New lead caps were installed on rails and parapets, and 13 marble stairs were replaced to better match the original stone. Carpenters tended to window maintenance, removing old paint and sanding prior to receiving a new coat of paint. WEI worked with subcontractors who installed a new banner hanging system and bird deterrent netting. Our conservation team assisted with the restoration of exterior bronze doors and a variety of brass plaques.
