The Sagamore Pendry Hotel project involved the restoration of an early-20th-century pier and warehouse building in Baltimore’s Fells Point neighborhood. Historically known as the Recreation Pier, and once used in a Baltimore-based television show, the building is a well-known city landmark originally built in 1914. Starting in 2010, the building began major renovations to convert the property into a luxury hotel. Worcester Eisenbrandt was engaged to perform the lead paint removal on the windows and doors, window restoration or replication for all windows and doors, and masonry restoration.
Because of the structures proximity to the Patapsco River, all work had to comply with strict environmental procedures to avoid releasing debris, chemicals, or effluent into the water.
WEI crews performed comprehensive cleaning on the exterior and interior masonry – including over 35,000 square feet of brick and 12,000 square feet of limestone – completely transforming the look of the building. Additionally, masons repointed nearly 30,000 linear feet of masonry elements and infilled losses with either salvaged or new masonry units. All areas of limestone damage throughout the property were repaired through Dutchmen repairs and resetting.
Worcester Eisenbrandt conducted extensive carpentry restoration of the property’s doors and windows. In total, WEI completed the restoration of 18 large oval window assemblies and 46 standard windows and frames. Additionally the company also replicated doors that had been missing, installed replacement glass and transoms on the first floor, and installed historic period hardware throughout the property. All carpentry elements in the property were completely stripped of lead paint and new glass components were replicated as necessary.
