Patterson Park Pagoda

The acreage that is now Patterson Park was first occupied by a Baltimore citizen in 1669 and became a city park in 1827.  Patterson Park Pagoda, designed by Parks Superintendent Charles H. Latrobe, has been a feature of the park since 1892. The sixty-foot-tall octagonal observation tower is a Victorian folly meant to mimic an Asian temple. The tower’s restoration was called for in a Landscape Master Plan and was completed in 2002, enabling the space to be reopened to the public. The Pagoda’s unique design and great views of the harbor, downtown and surrounding city makes it the most popular site to visit and photograph in the park. The Friends of Patterson Park maintain the building with hundreds of volunteers whose efforts improved the environment of community in the immediate area. Patterson Park was listed as a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Worcester Eisenbrandt provided rough and finish carpentry, as well as finishes for the extensive renovation of Patterson Park Pagoda’s interior and exterior. This included repairing and repainting the property’s wood windows, leaded glass transom panels, doors, and wainscot. Additionally, WEI repainted the metal balcony rails and the intricate interior spiral stairs of the property’s interior. WEI’s dedicated team of craftspeople also furnished replicated millwork and facilitated the replacement of the electrical system.

At the exterior, WEI removed and replaced all roof slate and the historic weathervane. New pre-cast concrete curbs were installed at the perimeter of all walkways as well as landscaping elements that included fencing and new trees. Finally, WEI staff carefully removed and reinstalled all asphalt pavers on a new base consisting of crushed stone and asphalt.

Worcester Eisenbrandt’s restoration work was a recipient of the Baltimore Building Congress and Exchange Craftsmanship Award.
