ARCHBISHOP OF BALTIMORE RESIDENCE

The property is a three-story residential building, used exclusively as home of the Archbishop; owned by the Archdiocese of Baltimore, dates back to the first American Archbishop of the Roman Catholic church in the United States: John Carroll. (1735-1815). The residence includes such architectural features as projecting oriel/bay window, one topped with balustrade, as well as decorative cornice of friese and corbel brackets. The Archbishop’s Residence was built in 1829; and enlarged in 1864 with a stucco-covered brick façade; which was later covered with the popular 1950’s era stone-like material: Formstone. The restoration project addressed the return of exterior facades, and all components, to historic appearance; in context with the adjoning, recently restored Baltimore Basilica; the nation’s first Roman Catholic Cathedral, designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, in the early 1800s and completed in 1863; National Historic Landmark: Minor Bascilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption.

Worcester Eisenbrandt provided extensive interior and exterior restoration and repair services in 2015. Complete replacement of exterior claddings was undertaken. Some areas required brick substrate repair and stabilization. The majority of recladding was achieved by applications of a prime coat, compatible with the finish stucco system; on which a mineral silicate finish paint (color chosen to match the original of the 1865) was painstakingly accomplished by WEI masonry craftsmen. Intricate, custom-crafted replicas of balustrades/balusters, cornice/dentil mouldings, oriel wood trim and copper roof flashing were also provided and installed by WEI. Our staff of carpenters repaired and refinished the cornices, in situ. Subsequent work has occurred at the interior. WEI skilled craftspersons and carpenters achieved the replication and/or repair of interior finishes at interior stair woodwork, room base and door trim and wood shutters, at several windows, as damage levels dictated.
